Founded by Diego Velázquez in 1514, the city was one of the seven chosen by the Spaniards as sites of colonial rule. Its location was ideal for agriculture and sugar plantations. The city fell into the hands of the pirates in 1665, and was abandoned for a long time by the rest of the world, becoming capital of the province in 1976.
